A World Bank working paper reports that Tools for Foundational Learning Improvement, a structured pedagogy programme tested across 80 low-fee private schools in Ghana's Central Region, raised reading scores by 0.5 standard deviations after nine months, more than two years of typical progress, with the largest gains among the weakest readers and a narrowing of the gender gap.
The programme pairs scripted lesson plans and student workbooks with a coaching app called SmartCoach. Its designers use generative AI to draft and adapt culturally specific story texts within strict phonics rules and to illustrate them, letting a small team of literacy experts scale the programme across languages and countries far faster than manual design would allow. A parallel pilot adaptation in Uganda produced almost identical results. The work was supported by the Gates Foundation through J-PAL's Learning for All Initiative.

Wadhwani AI, working with the Bridgespan Group and backed by Google.org, has published a system-level roadmap for embedding AI across India's public education system, from early childhood through higher education. The report sets out seven priority areas, including multilingual access, teacher support, and early childhood education, that it argues could reach up to 350 million learners if built into existing government platforms rather than run as standalone pilots.
It is not a hypothetical pitch. Two of Wadhwani AI's own tools, an Oral Reading Fluency assessment and a Spoken English Assessment and Practice tool, are already integrated into government systems, running large-scale reading and speaking assessments at a scale no human evaluator team could match. The report frames the economic stakes plainly: AI-enabled education could add an estimated $2.6 trillion to India's GDP by 2047, tied to the government's own Viksit Bharat 2047 growth target.

A midyear implementation report tracked how teachers across 12 Washington State school districts used a generative AI platform between September and December of the 2025-26 school year. Lesson planning accounted for 60% to 99% of all use in every district. Teachers serving larger shares of English language learners and students with special education needs used the tool more heavily for differentiation and accessibility materials. Districts also found a small positive association between teacher AI use and midyear reading scores, though the researchers are explicit that the finding is correlational: teachers who chose to use the platform may simply differ from those who didn't. No comparable association appeared in math.

The Federal Ministry of Education has begun the nationwide rollout of its AI Teacher Capacity Development Programme across Federal Unity Colleges, designed to strengthen teachers' digital skills, improve lesson planning, and promote responsible AI use in the classroom. It follows a pilot phase across six colleges chosen to represent Nigeria's six geopolitical zones. The Ministry has not yet published data on what that pilot found or how it shaped the design of the nationwide rollout.
