The EDSAFE AI Alliance and Arizona State University released a Learning Sciences Benchmark, developed with over 100 developers, learning scientists, and civil rights advocates, that tests tools against how children actually learn rather than against surface features. Its framing is blunt: generative AI is not a passing trend but an "arrival technology," a permanent layer that bypasses the usual gatekeepers. Since the tools cannot be kept out, the benchmark gives schools a way to judge them before they reach students.

Nigeria's Kwara State put 700 students and 130 teachers through hands-on AI and robotics training in two days

The training ran at the Ilorin Innovation Hub as part of STEM Africa Fest, organised with IHS Nigeria and the Kwara State Government. What sets it apart from the usual student-workshop model is that teacher capacity was built alongside student exposure, with 130 teachers trained to carry the tools back into their own classrooms rather than the skills leaving with the event. Pairing a state government with a telecoms infrastructure firm, it is a template other Nigerian states can copy.

TikTok is now teaching AI literacy to users in South Africa, Nigeria, and Kenya

The company launched an in-app hub to help users spot AI-generated content and understand how AI shapes what they see on the platform. It builds on TikTok's AI Literacy Fund, now past million, whose African partner content has drawn over 200 million views. The significance is where it happens: for many young people across these three countries, a social platform, not a school, is where they will first be taught to read AI critically.

A review of this year's Building Better AI submissions found the best tools are increasingly designed for the conditions LMIC classrooms actually have: low bandwidth, offline use, and neurodivergent learners, rather than assuming ideal infrastructure. The persistent weak spot is data governance, with many proposals still vague on how student data is stored, retained, and deleted. Tools that hold up in a real classroom, rather than a demo, are the ones the field is starting to take seriously.
