Three stories on AI reaching into classrooms that conflict and teacher shortages have already emptied out

The Aid for Rural Education Access Initiative has partnered with the Raspberry Pi Foundation to bring Experience AI into underserved communities in the north, after a first year that reached 1,142 teachers across five south-western states. Educators will be certified as facilitators and equipped to teach how AI systems work, how to use them responsibly, and how to apply them to local problems.
The curriculum is co-developed by Raspberry Pi and Google DeepMind and aligned to UNESCO's AI competency framework. AREAi's Global Executive Director Gideon Olanrewaju framed it around refugee populations and displaced learners, who he argues cannot be left behind in the AI revolution. The choice of states carries the weight here. Adamawa and Borno sit at the centre of the Boko Haram insurgency, with schools destroyed, teachers displaced and access to technology education thinnest anywhere in the country.

The Parho Khyber Pakhtunkhwa initiative uses AI to synthesise a photorealistic replica of a real educator, reproducing their face, voice and delivery, and puts that clone in front of the class. The first is already teaching. The system covers 2,900 modules across grades six to twelve, including physics, maths and Urdu.
What separates it from a decade of recorded-lesson libraries across South Asia is that officials say students can question the virtual teacher during the lesson and receive responses in real time. It is broadcast centrally from the provincial capital into pilot schools fitted with screens, cameras, microphones and sound systems. The province is investing Rs5 billion and projects annual savings above Rs100 billion, against a target of lifting literacy 30 to 35 percent in two years.
The technology is being introduced mainly to address teacher shortages in remote regions including Bajaur, South Waziristan, North Waziristan and Bannu, where science teachers are especially scarce. These are among the poorest districts in Pakistan, scarred by two decades of militancy that displaced populations and destroyed schools.

Bright Msaka, Minister of Education, Science and Technology, spoke on Tuesday at Beijing Normal University to a gathering of more than 20 education ministers, technology experts and policymakers. He argued that AI is already changing how knowledge is created, accessed and shared, and how students learn and academics teach and research, so the question of whether it arrives has been settled. What remains open is whether institutions and governments can steer it.
He set out the upside without hedging: AI can personalise learning, support students with different learning needs, strengthen research and innovation, improve academic administration, and widen access to quality educational resources. He also argued it can help countries like Malawi build the skills their economies will need. The significant part is the frame he attached, calling for responsible integration and naming inequality and exclusion as the failure modes to design against. That is a harder test than adoption, and it is one most deployments are not currently measured on. Reach and device counts are easy to report. Whether a system became less exclusionary is not, and it is rarely asked.
